Intermediate Scent Detection: Ryan Tate, Sep 12th&13th
This 2 day (Mon/Tues) workshop is suitable for people with some prior experience in scent detection. Your prior experience can include completing various scent related courses/workshops, attending Ryan’s previous workshop or completing Tate Animals online courses.
This workshop will cover the following topics:
- Perfecting suitable cues and responses from your dogs.
- How to create obsession and precision with your odours.
- Creating resilient and deliberate indications.
- Working dogs on multiple odours.
- Essential on and off lead detection obedience .
- Creating suitable independent search patterns.
Please be aware that we won’t be covering the basics. If you are wanting to attend and are yet to complete any basic training in this area, please head to tateanimals.com to enquire about completing a suitable online course prior to the workshop.
Ryan is a qualified Dog Trainer, Zoo Keeper, Marine Biologist, Trainer and Assessor. He has been a full-time professional animal trainer and handler since 2004. Alongside his Zoo Keeping career, Ryan started training and handling truffle detection dogs.
Since 2015 his sole focus has been conservation dogs. He owns and handles a variety of specialised dogs trained to find: Feral cats, foxes, rabbits, rats, owls, koalas, quolls, hawkweed and alligator weed to name a few.
Ryan’s dogs are considered the benchmark for obedience, efficiency and accuracy. His dogs have the highest number of Koala finds of any detection dog team in the 2019-2020 Australian bushfires.
Location: Pro Dog Training, 2 Tottenham Pde, West Footscray
Parking: Attendees will each have an allocated parking spot for the weekend.
Catering: We will provide tea/coffee and light snacks over the weekend. You will need to organise your own lunch each day.
Cost: Auditor spot: $360 Dog spot: $460
Please note that dog spots are by application only (8 dog spots in total). In order to apply for a dog spot you must purchase a non-refundable auditor spot first. You will then need to email through an application for the dog spot. We are looking for a variety of dogs for the workshop, but all most have done at least some basic scent work prior to the workshop. You will be notified approximately 4 weeks before the workshop start date to confirm if you have been successful. At this stage you will be required to pay the additional $100 fee for the dog spot.
If you are interested in a dog spot please detail your dog’s training history and their/your experience with scent detection.
Pro Dog will need to sight proof of a current C5 vaccination (or equivalent) prior to attending the seminar. Please also ensure your dogs are up to date with their worming/flea/tick treatments. All dogs will need to be crated when not being trained. You are free to take them out for a walk at anytime during the workshop. There is a theory component to this workshop and dogs will be worked one at a time for much of the weekend.
