Beyond Myths: Navigating Truths in Dog Training

The dog training industry is currently riddled with myths, misconceptions, and polarising debates that ultimately hinder our progress, and impact the well-being of the dogs we strive to help.

This is a unique opportunity for canine professionals, dog enthusiasts, and industry newcomers. A workshop designed to restore objectivity and foster a deeper understanding of how best to train and improve the lives of dogs. Covering topics such as:

– Navigating the maze of science in dog training – learn to distinguish fact from fiction, and challenge common misconceptions and misinformation arising from research articles.

– Exploring methods, approaches, and ideologies – consider opposing concepts and ideas seeking to uncover the truth and avoid ‘throwing the baby out with the bathwater’.

– Definitions of welfare – investigate how welfare is defined in dog training research and discover what a comprehensive definition might look like.

– Looking beyond behaviourism and the quadrants – explore newer schools of thought and their contribution to providing effective training and enhanced welfare.

– Developing a practical framework for evaluating across training methods – learn to apply your knowledge to devise effective humane training strategies, customised to each individual dog.

Leading the workshop is Jacqui Zakar, the founder of Dog Sense Training and Behaviour. Jacqui specialises in behaviour modification, providing a unique approach to training. Building on previous psychology qualifications, she has gained a depth of knowledge in dog training methods and research through active engagement in industry debates, extensive social media outreach, and her role with Professional Dog Trainers of Australia Inc (PDTA).

This engaging event will tackle current pressing issues within the dog training industry head-on, providing a safe space to learn, question, and grow.
