Animal Trainer: Dave McKelson – Saturday, Oct 8th

Gain unique insights into the methods used to train zoo animals and how training is utilised to improve animal welfare, and create visitor demonstrations/presentations. David has over 17 years of experience working in various zoos. Throughout that period David developed and implemented training programs for a wide range of species including seals, great apes and elephants; winning multiple awards for many of these programs and the department he ran at a reputable zoo.

David will also discuss his transition into dogs and how he utilises elements of his past zoo experience to develop the Pro Dog Training program as it runs today, with specific focus on developing skills/tricks/behaviour.

Other areas that will be covered include:

  • Free/assisted shaping, capturing behaviour, target training and luring.
  • How frequently you should train and how to structure your sessions.
  • Developing training documentation to support your program.
  • Building skills/behaviour on cue:
    • Where to start (how to select appropriate skills to train).
    • Markers & Rewards systems
    • Manipulating the environment for Perfect Practice.
    • Chaining behaviour
    • Creating reliability.

David is the owner and operator of one of Australia’s most successful and largest dog training and daycare businesses. Pro Dog has one of the most comprehensive training programs in the world for pet dogs and a large team of highly skilled trainers.

Dog Spots:  We have a limit of 4 dog spots (by application only once you have purchased a non-refundable auditor spot). The dog spots will be utilised to demonstrate various skill-sets pertaining to skill based work. If you are interested in a dog spot please email through your dog’s behavioural history, their current training level and your behavioural goals in an email application to us after you have purchased your ticket.

Our team will need to sight proof of a current C5 vaccination (or equivalent) prior to attending the seminar. Please also ensure your dogs are up to date with their worming/flea/tick treatments.

Catering: We will provide tea/coffee, light snacks and PIZZA for dinner.

Refund policy: Pro Dog will only offer a refund or exchange of a ticket if an event is cancelled, rescheduled or significantly relocated by the Seller (and you cannot or do not wish to attend the rescheduled or relocated event), or to the extent otherwise required by law (including the Australian Consumer Law).
